Selling alcohol, vape, cannabis or adult products puts obligations on you that most Shopify stores never think about. The rules vary by product and jurisdiction, and getting them wrong carries consequences well beyond a bad review.
This is the one area where an app is a component of compliance rather than the whole of it — worth being clear about up front.
Start with an age gate
An age verification prompt shown before the shopper reaches the catalogue is the baseline expectation in most restricted categories. It establishes that you asked.
It should remember the answer. Asking on every page turns a compliance step into an abandonment driver, and shoppers will simply leave rather than confirm five times.
Restrict where you cannot legally ship
If a product cannot be sold into a region, the cleanest outcome is that the shopper never reaches the product page at all. Taking an order you must then cancel costs you a refund, a support conversation and often a chargeback.
Blocking can be applied by country, city or specific IP address, which also handles the separate problem of regions that generate far more fraud than revenue.
Do not block search engines
The common failure here is applying geographic restrictions so bluntly that crawlers are caught by them. If Googlebot cannot reach your pages, they stop being indexed, and the compliance fix quietly destroys your organic traffic.
Shoppers are restricted; crawlers are not. Verify this after any change to your blocking rules.
Protect your product photography
Restricted categories attract resellers who copy listings wholesale. Disabling right-click, drag and text selection stops casual copying, which is most of it.
Be realistic about the ceiling: anything a browser renders can ultimately be captured. This is a deterrent, not a guarantee, and treating it as one leads to bad decisions.
What an app does not cover
An age gate is not legal advice and does not by itself make you compliant. Licensing, shipping restrictions, carrier rules, tax treatment and packaging requirements all sit outside anything software can do for you.
Get the specifics for your product and the markets you sell into confirmed by someone qualified. The app handles the storefront mechanics; it does not handle the law.
The outcome
The storefront mechanics of restricted selling are handled consistently, leaving you to deal with the parts that genuinely need a human.
